Survey of crops damaged during Cyclones Burevi and Nivar was already done
With the unseasonal rainfall during this month resulting in waterlogging and lodging of crops in some parts of the central region, farmers have called for a fresh enumeration for sanction of compensation to affected farmers. Inundation of paddy, groundnut and blackgram crops were reported in villages in Andimadam and Jayamkondam blocks in Ariyalur district on Thursday. Lodging of paddy crop ready for harvest was also reported in T. Palur area.

Farmers organisations have welcomed Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami’s announcement sanctioning input relief for farmers affected by recent cyclones – Nivar and Burevi. Expressing gratitude to the government for accepting their pleas for increasing the relief given under the disaster relief fund to ₹20,000 from ₹13,500 a hectare, P. R. Pandian, president, Tamil Nadu All Farmers Associations Coordination Committee, observed that for several years the relief given under fund had not been increased. “We have been pressing for a hike taking into account the increase in input and cultivation costs,” he said, expressing delight over the hike in the quantum of compensation.

On the second day of their tour of areas affected by the heavy rainfall caused by cyclone Burevi in the State, the Central team inspected crop damages in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts on Wednesday.
An eight member led by Ashutosh Agnihotri, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, visited affected areas and interacted with farmers for a first-hand account of the damage caused by the rain to standing crops.
