While only 30% of buses set out of the eight depots in Virudhunagar district in the morning, it gradually went up to 44% by afternoon and 50% later. However, with trade unions intensifying the strike from Friday and even members of Anna Thozhir Sanga Peravai too joining the agitation, the officials felt the pressure in operating buses. Out of the scheduled 403 bus services, only 206 buses were operated. Among them were 120 muffosil buses and 86 town buses.

Kannan flagged off a two-wheeler rally to highlight the importance of wearing helmets here on Thursday and inaugurated a traffic awareness bus introduced by Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation. He said that these efforts were part of the 32nd National Road Safety Month being observed from January 18. The rally passed through arterial roads and crowded places in the town to create awareness among the people of the importance of following road rules. The awareness bus had photographs of road accidents on its body. Inside the bus, officials displayed various exhibits on road safety rules. A television screen played video-clippings of road accidents.

Andhra Pradesh state government reacted to this immediately, as it would be a problem for the people who went to their home towns for Sankranti festival. The transport departments of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have finally agreed to resume the inter state bus services. Though there is an agreement between the two states, due to some small issues, the Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation officials have stopped the bus services. Tamil Nadu RTC officials stopped three RTC buses from Tirupati depot and two from Chittoor depot due to lack of permit.
