Pakistan: Sindh Assembly passes bill to keep journalists safe
A landmark piece of legislation, the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Bill 2021 was passed unanimously by the Sindh Assembly on May 28. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) commend this breakthrough and the initiative taken by journalist unions, human rights groups, and lawmakers in the Sindh province to protect the rights of media workers. The journalist protections bill was drafted in consultation with journalist representative organisations, including the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).
"No person or institution, whether private or public, shall engage in any act that violates or threatens the right to life and security of any journalist or media practitioner," reads a section of the Bill.
