“Officials from the Indian Embassy in Washington DC witnessed the test,” said Ankur Kanaglekar, an official of the aircraft manufacturer, at a virtual press briefing.
In 2018, the Indian Navy kick-started the process to procure 57 multi-role combat aircraft for its carriers, which use the ski-jump take off mechanism.
At present, six planes are compatible for the aircraft carrier Rafale (Dassault, France), F/A-18 Super Hornet (Boeing, US), MIG-29K (Russia), F-35B and F-35C (Lockheed Martin, US) and Gripen (Saab, Sweden).
Synopsis
The US origin jet is expected to see the French Rafale fighter as the main competition for the Indian Navy requirement, even as efforts are on to develop an indigenous carrier borne aircraft for the future. A foreign acquisition may be required to fill a gap as work on the indigenous aircraft will take at least a decade to complete.
