India becomes third country to top 300,000 Covid-19 deaths as vaccine shortage bites

India reported 4,454 new Covid-19 fatalities on Monday, bringing the country s death toll to 303,720, according to the Indian Ministry of Health.
India is the third country to report more than 300,000 deaths from the virus, after Brazil and the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The health ministry also reported 222,315 new coronavirus infections, marking the fourth consecutive day that the number of cases reported in the country have declined.
However, Monday s death count is the highest daily death toll reported since May 19.
NEW DELHI/PATNA: Lockdown was extended in Bihar and Himachal Pradesh on Monday till May end while Uttarakhand too decided to continue with the Covid-induced curfew, as several states said that the restrictions have led to an improvement in the pandemic situation.
States and Union Territories started imposing restrictions from mid-April for varying periods as the deadly second wave of coronavirus hit the country and most of them have now extended the curbs till the end of this month to rein in the spread of infection and the mounting deaths which have crossed the three lakh mark.
The Union Health Ministry on Monday said a steady decline in daily new Covid-19 cases has been observed since the last 17 days in India.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Monday asked officials to undertake a real-time assessment and review of the requirement of drugs needed for the treatment of black fungus in city hospitals and ensure their immediate procurement , sources said. He also directed officials to address any additional and prospective logistical requirements in hospitals with regard to the treatment of black fungus at the earliest, they said. This comes amid a rising number of black fungus or mucormycosis cases in Delhi. According to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as of Monday, Delhi has around 500 mucormycosis cases and the city has been grappling with a shortage of Amphotericin-B injection used in the treatment of the fungal infection.

Air travel this weekend was nearly back to 2019 numbers

Air travel hit a new high of the pandemic this weekend.
Numbers from the Transportation Security Administration show it screened 90% of the people it screened on the equivalent day in 2019, prior to the pandemic.
The Sunday figure of 1.86 million people screened is compared to nearly 2.1 million on the equivalent Sunday of 2019. At this point in 2020, the pandemic had driven air travel into a major hole, and the TSA reported only 267,000 screenings.
