NSW Police empowered to shut businesses after 239 new COVID cases

James D. Morgan/Getty Images NSW Police will be empowered to shut down businesses and worksites it deems to be a risk to public health during Sydney’s COVID-19 lockdown. The escalation of police powers comes in response to a “small number of people” not complying with lockdown measures, Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said on Thursday. The state tallied 239 new local cases of COVID-19, the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic. NSW Police will be granted the power to close Sydney businesses and construction sites it deems are a risk to public health after the state recorded its highest number of new coronavirus cases in the community since the outbreak began.

Australia sends a MILLION AstraZeneca vaccines overseas

Australia has sent a million AstraZeneca vaccines to the Pacific after changing health advice caused many Aussies to shun the effective jab. Half a million have been sent to Fiji, almost 300,000 to East Timor and the rest to Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tonga. There is hesitancy over the jab in Australia due to a rare risk of blood clots, which affect roughly one in 50,000 depending on age.
