Melbourne and Brisbane have been issued urgent COVID-19 alerts after more viral fragments were discovered in wastewater across Victoria and travellers accidentally breached restrictions at Brisbane International Airport
Similar wastewater alerts have been issued before, but the latest warning comes after a strong and unexpected surge in viral fragments
As such, 246 people have been asked to get tested as a precaution given the viral fragments could indicate an active case travelling through the community
Meanwhile, hundreds of people at Brisbane International Airport have been potentially exposed to the virus after two travellers from Papua New Guinea unwittingly entered a green zone of the airport

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young says today s new locally acquired coronavirus case is not a risk at all to the wider community.(9News) When the person came back to Queensland, they went into quarantine and they were tested on Monday night and they were negative on Monday night, Dr Young said. Then they were tested again Wednesday morning when they were positive, so they have been in quarantine during their infectious period â so not a risk at all.
The woman resides with a previously detected case who is now in hospital in the Wide Bay region, with Dr Young saying it s unclear whether the woman contracted her infection from the hen s party or from her housemate.

Queensland’s single new locally acquired case of COVID-19 has been isolating for the last few days which means the state’s health system will not need to release any new virus notifications.
While the lockdown will end at 12pm, restrictions will remain including a mask mandate, seating limitations and household gathering limitations.
Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said restrictions would remain because she had “been burnt” and wanted to move forward with an abundance of caution.
