Joshua Carpenter named Officer of the Year by Crime Stoppers

May 25, 2021 Galesburg Police Officer Joshua Carpenter has been named the 2021 Officer of the Year by Galesburg Area Crime Stoppers. Carpenter has only been with GPD for just over 2 years but was nominated by three different colleagues.  Officer Carpenter works 3rd shift and last year made several felony drug arrests, cash seizures, and confiscated several firearms from felons. Carpenter was also given kudos from other City Employees for the way he handled a despondent subject.  Police Chief Russ Idle and Vice President of Galesburg Area Crime Stoppers Mark Cratty presented Carpenter with the award. Crime Stoppers says, “Officer Carpenter’s proactive policing has made the community of Galesburg a safer place to live.”

There have been 15 shooting-related arrests in Galesburg so far in 2021, and police say that number is normally in the single digits for this time of year. The Galesburg Police Department is teaming up with state and federal agencies to address the problem, creating a Violent Crime Task Force. Chief Russ Idle says more officers will be working together with the Knox County Sheriff, Illinois State Police and FBI when necessary.

Election Roundup: Signs stolen, Galesburg misspelled in mailer Election sign thefts   Tuesday, Galesburg Police released a notice of multiple reports of stolen election signs. They noted that this is a theft punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.  Police Chief Russ Idle was quoted saying that anyone caught stealing election signs will be arrested. The thefts have impacted at least one mayoral candidate personally.  Mayoral candidate Peter Schwartzman took to Facebook Tuesday night saying that his signs started disappearing from his own yard Monday night.  “I am pretty confident that I will be able to find out who did this on video. It is so ridiculous that someone is so callous to remove yard signs,” he said. “As the police chief made clear in a press release today, people engaging in this type of activity will be prosecuted and jail time is a potential outcome.”
