In Odisha s Sundargarh district, villagers are on a do-or-die agitation to curb coal pollution

Representational image. | AFP For over a decade, the villages near the Kulda opencast mine in Odisha’s Hemgiri block in the Sundargarh district have been fighting coal pollution without respite. In a desperate bid to highlight their unrelenting situation, the people of the area are now locked in a “do or die” agitation against the project since January. In February, Rajendra Naik, a human rights defender from Ratanpur, one of the affected villages located 10 km from the Kulda mines, filed an application in the Odisha High Court, against the central and state government and the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, which manages the mine. He submitted that the coal transport passing by Ratanpur and 25 villages along a 30 km stretch to Chhattisgarh violated the environmental clearance for the mine in 2002 and in 2018, which stipulated that the coal transported by road, shall be carried out by covered/conveyers with effective control measu

WCL CMD Manoj Kumar gets additional charge of CMPDIL Manoj Kumar, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has been entrusted with the additional charge of CMD of CMPDIL. The order issued by the Ministry of Coal today in this regard will be effective from 1st May 2021 for a period of six months or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post, or till the further orders, whichever is earliest. Manoj Kumar had assumed the charge of CMD of WCL on January 1, 2021.Earlier Kumar was the Director Technical (Operations) of WCL.

Crime Branch files supplementary chargesheet in multi-crore cooperative fraud in Jammu JAMMU: The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday filed a supplementary chargesheet against a couple here for duping people of nearly Rs 2.93 crore in the name of a co-operative with promise of providing higher rates of interest. The chargesheet was filed in a local court against Surjeet Singh, the then chairman-cum-managing director of Rural Development Multipurpose Cooperative Limited and his wife Jyoti Pawar in the case filed in 2019 against them under various sections of Ranbir Panel Code and the Banking Regulation Act, a spokesman of the Crime Branch, Jammu said.
