Former Bradford County Coroner Thomas Carman was charged Wednesday in Pennsylvania with embezzling nearly $432,000 during his years as CEO of a nonprofit Canton-area ambulance service.
The stolen funds were allegedly used for various personal expenses, ranging in the thousands for concerts and events, to movies to clothing purchases.
Pennsylvania State Police arrested Carman, 55, after an investigation that began in 2019. He had served as CEO of Western Alliance Emergency Services from 2000 until 2019, court documents say, and that s when board members of Western Alliance uncovered suspected embezzlement just as the nonprofit was on the verge of bankruptcy.
Carman held complete control over the ambulance service s finances, including signatory and transaction authority over all its bank accounts during at least 2014 until 2019, court documents say. He also had a bank debit card and credit card in the ambulance service s name.
