Shillong:
A lower court has granted anticipatory bail to National People s Party (NPP) MLA Thomas Sangma, who is accused of rape.
Sangma was given bail on the condition that he not go missing or leave the state without notice. He was also instructed to keep his distance from the victim.
An FIR was filed against the MLA earlier this week under IPC sections 376 for rape and 506 for criminal intimidation for allegedly raping the woman on many occasions. He has been raping me on the pretext of getting married from January 2020 till 17 April 2021, the victim stated.
According to the victim, she and a friend were invited to the Magnum hotel in Shillong early last year. Sangma offered them a drink, at which point she dropped unconscious.

The Opposition Congress in Meghalaya has demanded the removal of an MLA accused of raping a woman from the committees of the 60-member Assembly.
The police on Tuesday confirmed that a woman had lodged an FIR against National People’s Party (NPP) legislator Thomas Sangma for allegedly abusing her sexually.
The NPP heads a coalition government, with the BJP as a constituent. The legislator, representing the Tura Assembly constituency, is also the chief advisor to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
