Land-starved Singapore gets creative with solar in clean energy push

Land-starved Singapore gets creative with solar in clean energy push Reuters 2 hrs ago By Rina Chandran BANGKOK, April 16 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Singapore is betting on floating solar farms and vertical panels to increase its clean-energy supplies and cut carbon emissions, a model that could work in other densely populated cities, urban experts said. With renewable energy options such as wind, hydro, nuclear and biomass ruled out, solar photovoltaic (PV) is the most viable option for Singapore, despite limited land for large-scale farms, and challenges such as frequent cloud cover. Last month, Singapore inaugurated a 5 megawatt (MW) offshore floating PV system on the Johor Strait, part of its goal to install at least 2 gigawatt of solar power by 2030 – five times current capacity - and halving its carbon emissions by 2050.

Floating solar systems in S pore provide clean energy but impacts on wildlife have to be considered

Besides vertical spaces and rooftops, another alternative space to place solar panels is on reservoirs. Floating solar farms aim to increase S pore s renewable energy Tengeh Reservoir is one of the reservoirs where the construction of a floating solar system has commenced. Spanning an area of over 32 hectares, which is the size of around 45 football fields, the solar system at Tengeh Reservoir will be one of the world s largest floating solar systems. The energy generated from the solar farm is expected to power about 16,000 four-room HDB flats and will offset seven per cent of PUB s annual energy needs. Other than Tengeh Reservoir, the national water agency PUB is also in the process of implementing solar systems at Bedok and Lower Seletar reservoirs.
