At 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, a municipal water plant operator in Oldsmar, Florida, noticed the city’s water treatment control system was being accessed remotely. Assuming it was his supervisor, the operator saw no cause for alarm, until a few hours later when he witnessed the cursor moving across the screen of its own accord and adjusting the level of sodium hydroxide, or lye, to more than one hundred times what it should be.
Tech giant downplays location and Covid-states leakage concerns
Security researchers have gone public with troubling privacy issues in Google’s support for contact-tracing apps that they claim can expose users’ information.
AppCensus, a privacy analysis company, discovered the shortcomings of the Android implementation of the Google-Apple Exposure Notification (GAEN) framework as part of a US Department of Homeland Security-funded program.
The team disclosed the issues to Google in mid-February. Google, however, rejected the vulnerability report, prompting AppCensus’s decision to go public with its concerns in a blog post on Tuesday (April 27).

AppCensus is at pains to stress that it has no issue with Covid-19 contact tracing apps per se; rather, it’s the Google implementation of what was supposed to be a privacy-preserving technology it has concerns about.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed Friday that all border barrier projects executed by the agency in Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security-funded sites were halted in compliance with the president’s order.
“Only construction activity that is necessary to safely prepare each site for a suspension of work will occur over the next few days,” said Raini Brunson, a spokesperson for the agency.
The president also asked officials to develop a plan within 60 days for the redirection of funds for the border wall, which would include “consideration of terminating or repurposing contracts with private contractors engaged in wall construction.”
