Full disclosure:
Ugly Betty is the reason I’m working in fashion today, so the show holds a special place in my heart. But, favouritism aside, MODE is probably the closest representation to a real fashion magazine that we’ve seen on film or television – and here’s why. Sure, there are plenty of perks that come with working in fashion, even when your foot is desperately clinging on to the lowermost rung, but clambering up is hard work and nobody endures more than Betty. Not only is she piled high with menial tasks, working what seems like every hour of the day, she’s also paid so little she has to live at home and commute into the city each day and faces merciless bullying from her colleagues without a whisper from HR. She’s a brilliant but unsung hero, endlessly saving the day with her ideas and quick thinking, and yet isn’t recognised for years. In fact, back in the day when the show first aired, MODE would have only lost points for realism by having a Black woman as

SOME OF THE CAST NEVER MADE IT IN THE FILM BECAUSE THEY WERE BEHIND BARS
“A couple of people we had cast couldn t do it because they were in jail. But most of the cast we chose and then Harmony (Korine) wrote for them. Harold was Harold (Hunter). Casper was Justin (Pierce). The girls were a little difficult to find because we had to find girls that were actually 18 that looked 12. Chloë (Sevigny) was cast completely against type. She was a club girl. She was around, you know?”
ONLY ONE SCENE WAS UNSCRIPTED
“It was all scripted. There was no improv except one scene: the four boys on the couch towards the end of the movie at the party? Those guys just showed up from San Francisco – three of them did and came over because they liked skaters and I just saw them and said, I have to do something. So I stuffed them on this little couch about this wide (gestures), and I said talk about this, talk about this, talk about this. It was just magic. It was probably the best scene
The idea behind the compilation of looks from years gone by was inspired by Reese Witherspoon, Spears explains. A recent Instagram Reel by Witherspoon cycles through grunge-infused looks from when her career was taking off in the 90s (a counterpoint to the brash, colourful style a decade later).
Spears also recently answered some fan questions via Instagram, offering a more contemporary update on her life. Specifically, she turned her attention to the most frequently-asked question is she ok? saying: “Yes, I’m totally fine. I’m extremely happy. I have a beautiful home, beautiful children. I’m taking a break right now because I’m enjoying myself.”
