The goal is to raise awareness and attempt to change people s driving habits, especially bad ones. Distracted driving is a real problem Nationwide as more and more drivers aren t paying attention to the road and what they re doing behind the wheel. You d be surprised at just how many accidents and fender benders are caused by distracted driving. Most accidents these days are attributed to one form or another of distracted driving and our roads and highways have become far more dangerous and deadly because of it. So let s try to do something about it.

On Thursday, April 8, law enforcement agencies will be conducting high-visibility patrols aimed at distracted drivers. Distracted driving is considered any activity that takes attention away from the task of driving and includes everything from adjusting the radio to texting to eating and drinking. In 2020, Indiana became the 22nd state in the nation to pass a hands-free device driving law, which prohibits motorists from holding a mobile device, except in emergencies, while their vehicles are moving. Anyone caught violating the law could face a Class C infraction with fines up to $500.

SPEED AND LACK OF SEAT BELT USE REMAIN TOP REASONS FOR HIGHWAY DEATHS IN 2021

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety says during the first quarter of the year, there were 176 fatalities in Missouri as a result of traffic crashes. Though down slightly from the first quarter of 2020, officials remain concerned increases in speed observed during the early stages of the pandemic have carried over into this year. Preliminary reporting indicates excessive speed played a role in nearly one-third of the traffic deaths so far this year, and this behavior has been exhibited even in vulnerable roadway environments such as work zones. In a recent work zone, law-enforcement officers issued 79 citations including several drivers traveling over 100 mph within just a few hours.
