Local residents and communities were given the opportunity to recycle scrap tires that may have accumulated over time or been found deposited along roadsides and in public parks and 164 participants combined to collect just under 1,600 scrap tires, weighing over 23 tons. Those tires were then delivered to an area processing facility where they will be recycled into pavers, running tracks, or used for civil engineering and other such purposes.

Household hazardous waste

By The Examiner staff Independence residents have a chance to get rid of unneeded materials in the garage and elsewhere Saturday, as the city will host its annual household hazardous waste disposal event 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the edge of the Square. The free event, in the county/city parking lot bounded by Liberty, Osage and Walnut and Kansas, is open to Independence residents only. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or recent utility bill, will be required. All types of residential household hazardous waste will be accepted. That includes: paint and paint products, automotive oil and fluids, automotive and household batteries, household cleaners and solvents, outdated medicines, poisons, herbicides and pesticides, kerosene, gasoline and fluorescent light bulbs.

The Examiner Santa’s famous ride across the sky is a recent memory and probably by now all of the presents have been unwrapped, paper has been bagged up, and the bows and ribbons saved and packed for next year (right!). I’ve paraphrased what Matt Riggs, recycling outreach coordinator with the Mid-America Regional Council (Solid Waste Management District, said on KCUR radio: Trash from Kansas City households dramatically increases from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. Presumably, much of this waste is gift wrap. All gift wrap can be recycled, unless it is shiny, or foil. Your beautiful live Christmas tree has been gracing your living room for several weeks spreading pine-scented fragrance and good cheer. It might be getting a little frazzled at this point, and the needles are starting to drop. It’s time to find the perfect place for recycling.
