Hand-wringing over Dr. Seuss books not justified
As a former children’s librarian, I was shocked by the outrage expressed over a few of the less popular Dr. Seuss books going out of print not banned, censored, or cancelled, just ceasing to be published. Books go out of print every day, even books by popular authors.
In the proverbial marketplace of ideas, some ideas cease to be marketable. Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was a product of his race, his place, and his time. He graduated from college in the mid-1920s, when KKK membership was peaking, when most “public” libraries were whites-only, and racial stereotypes were considered acceptable (to some white people I doubt they were ever considered acceptable to the people being portrayed). Those days are long gone, and the books in question lingered in the market only because of their author’s name, not due to quality; stereotyping itself is a sign of lack of imagination on the part of an author or illustra

Richmond School Board strongly opposes establishment of Education Savings Accounts
The Indiana General Assembly during its 2021 legislative session is considering the establishment of education savings accounts (ESAs) that funnel state funding to parents who withdraw their children from public school. ESAs give parents the equivalent of a taxpayer-funded debit card for private school tuition, unregulated home schools and educational services such as tutoring. Public funds should be invested in public schools, which serve ALL children. Public schools are subject to fiscal transparency, public oversight and taxpayer accountability. Non-public schools are NOT. All schools that receive public funds should be held to the same set of standards.
