GUWAHATI: The “encounter spree” in Assam continued unabated with another alleged drug peddler being shot and injured on Friday while trying to escape from police custody in Assam’s Morigaon district. With Friday’s shooting incident, 34 people accused in different cases, including rape, murder, drug-peddling, cattle smuggling and dacoity, have been shot at by the police, with varying results, while trying to escape from custody. Of these 34 people, 19 were shot and injured and 15 died of gunshot wounds, including 10 militants of the Dimasa National Liberation Army, United People’s Revolutionary Front and National Liberation Front of Bodoland, in the past two months after the new government took over.

Of the 15 killed, 10 were militants. On Friday, another alleged drug peddler was shot at in central Assam’s Morigaon district while trying to escape from police custody. While 24 people (five of them later died) accused in different cases, including rape, murder, drug peddling, cattle smuggling, dacoity and so on, who were shot at by the police while trying to escape from custody, 10 militants of Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA), United People’s Revolutionary Front (UPRF) and National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) were killed in the past two months.
