Fred Sawyer Matthews

Fred Sawyer Matthews was born in Tallahassee, Florida on Feb. 28, 1938, to the late Dorothy Sawyer and Jack Matthews. He passed away after a brief illness on April 14 in Tampa, with his wife and daughter by his side. He is survived by his wife, Karin SchrÃter Elisabeth Matthews, son Frank Steven Matthews (Karen), daughter Monica Santana (Jose), and grandsons Alex Matthews; Joey & Robby Santana, and his cat, Tippy. Fred grew up in Apalachicola, Florida where he attended Chapman High and was the class valedictorian. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He was the football team captain and also played trumpet with the band during halftime.

Mary Hough Rendall Blair Mary Hough Rendall Blair, 89, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021, surrounded by family and friends at her home in Vero Beach, Fla., after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Mary lived an exceptional life, and will be remembered for her wonderful friendships, enduring community spirit and amazing resilience. She was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She made lifelong friends wherever she went, as a student, sailor, skier, traveler, on the beach, the golf course, and walking Jake, her beloved Bichon. She traveled the world for seven decades, attending the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, making two trips to Antarctica and exploring all seven continents. She thrived in adventure and rarely spotted a bird she could not identify. She inspired all who knew her with a positive “can do” spirit. Her optimism was unyielding, no matter the challenges.

(WVIR) - Arbor Day is known for planting trees, but a company in Charlottesville is using this Friday, April 30, to care for them at Trinity Episcopal Church. “There’s branches falling and branches will continue to fall in thunderstorms if we don’t do something about it right now,” Van Yahres Tree Company Co-Owner Jake Van Yahres said. Van Yahres says massive trees need attention. “We’re donating tree work to Trinity Episcopal Church, and so we’ve worked with them for a long time and they’re an awesome church, super inclusive of everyone. So we came out to take a look at some trees that have a couple problems,” he said.
