Musician Bob Schmucker recognized there was a growing need to help food insecure families and began live streaming his music from home asking for donations to help support Feeding Southwest Virginia, one of the busiest food non profits in the region.
“I did it for the first 5 or 6 weeks myself, til I started running out of material, Schmucker remembers with a laugh. And then I just said, well, I’m gonna move this over to the coffee house and get all my buddies involved. ”
Schmucker is a volunteer at the Third Street Coffee House, an old cabin-like room in the basement of Trinity United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Since it’s not safe to have a room full of listeners and performers, he’s been hosting a new artist every Tuesday and live streaming the event. All proceeds have been donated to Feeding SW Virginia. To the tune of $7,690 since May.
CHIPPEWA FALLS â When Mike Cohoon began working on plans for tiny homes â portable homeless shelters â he envisioned a long-term plan of creating the âHope Village,â bringing the tiny homes into one central location, which would also include a permanent building that features showers and bathrooms.
That plan is moving closer to reality.
Cohoon, a pastor at Landmark Christian Church in Lake Hallie, said his group is planning to purchase a former dental office at 1825 Kennedy Road on the East Hill of Chippewa Falls. The tiny homes would be placed behind the 2,000-square-foot building, with the dental offices gutted and renovated.

After the state changed the law in the spring, which increased the number of Code Blue nights, the M25 Initiative, who operated and funded Code Blue shelters across the country, stopped operating the shelters. However, local volunteers are running the operations, for now.
A change to the stateâs Code Blue alert law early this year has strained the services of agencies that shelter Cumberland Countyâs homeless during frigid nights.
The programs have managed to continue, though, due in part to the efforts of two women working with support from the community, little sleep and a deep faith in God.
