New historical marker shows location of Tallahassee s oldest congregation

Tallahassee s Trinity United Methodist Church on Park Avenue is already preparing for it s 200th anniversary in 2024.
Just before Easter on April 1, Trinity’s Historical Society erected a State of Florida historic marker in front of the church with the cooperation of the Secretary of State.
It gives a brief history of the church, its outreach and service to citizens of the City of Tallahassee, and its assistance to its Black members to start their own church following the end of the Civil War.
In 1821 Tallahassee was a wild frontier with about 2,000 citizens, half of whom were enslaved people. There were a few rustic commercial buildings and dirt roads just wide enough for bloody duels to take place.

As a child growing up in Queens, New York, Kelly Whitesides knew what it meant to worry about where her next meal was coming from. I know how important this program is, she said, as she stood with her husband Sam in the BackPack Weekend Food Program warehouse on Linwood Road in Gastonia. I was one of those kids when I was young, she continued. I like the way this program works. I like the way the kids receiving the food are not singled out or embarrassed. I like the good this program does.

Several area agencies will receive an extra level of support thanks to a $2.2 million gift to the Hutchinson Community Foundation from the estate of the late Bonnie and Franklin Fee.
Born in Hutchinson in the 1930s, both attended school here before departing to the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
But Hutchinson and family drew them back and in the early 1950s, Franklin and his brother Jim joined their father Frank’s real estate and insurance firm, the Frank Fee Agency.
Through a series of mergers, by 1957, it had become a partnership between the three called the Fontron-Fee agency, with a Hutchinson lineage dating back to 1883.
The clinic that’s been canceled was originally scheduled to take place Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church. People made the appointment for the second dose while receiving the first dose about four weeks ago. Moderna vaccine doses should generally be scheduled about four weeks apart, while Pfizer’s two doses should be scheduled about three weeks apart.
The health department is contacting the 572 people scheduled to receive their second Moderna dose Thursday to let them know about the cancelation.
Another clinic of first doses, which will be administered to older, vulnerable patients and staff at North Florida Regional Medical Center on Saturday, is not expected to be impacted by the delay.
