SC affirms conviction of bar owner for coercing minor into prostitution

Published July 25, 2021, 12:55 PM Supreme Court (SC) The Supreme Court (SC) has affirmed the life imprisonment imposed on a karaoke bar owner who hired a 15-year-old girl in 2009 and coerced her to engage in prostitution in Camalig, Albay. In a resolution promulgated last June 21 and posted on its website last July 15, affirmed by the SC were the rulings of the trial court and Court of Appeals (CA) which convicted Leny O. Brujas of qualified trafficking in persons under Republic Act No. 9208, the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003. Aside from the prison term, Brujas was ordered to pay a fine of P2 million, and moral and exemplary damages of P600,000. She has been detained at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City.

NBP frees 2 more inmates

Published July 18, 2021, 11:37 AM NBP The New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City released last July 15 two more persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) under the Bureau of Corrections’ (BuCor) jail decongestion program. In a statement, BuCor said one of those released had been granted parole while the other one had served his prison term. It said those released underwent rapid antigen tests on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and were given financial assistance for travel expenses. “BuCor, under the leadership of Director General Gerald Q. Bantag and Acting Superintendent CCInsp. Reynold T. Pablo Jr. continuously implement its Decongestion Program amidst the pandemic,” it said.

Published July 7, 2021, 12:58 PM Bureau of Corrections On account of their good conduct while serving their minimum prison terms, four persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) have been released from the Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) in Mindanao. In a statement, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said that those released had served their minimum jail terms and whose merits under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) had been verified and confirmed. “Four lives will start a new beginning as they were ordered ‘released’ to join the mainstream society for they had served the maximum period of their sentences through GCTA,” it said.
