When it comes to LGBT+ rights and policies, Switzerland has historically lagged behind most of Western Europe. However, in the past decade, there have been marked changes in the civil rights afforded to lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, and intersex people. Although Switzerland is famous for taking a neutral role in terms of international matters, its laws on LGBT+ rights have not remained impartial. That said, since the 1940s, the country has been quickly liberalizing civil rights for LGBT+ people, making it one of the world’s safer countries for the community. Furthermore, the country has made huge strides since 2019, with several important referendums set to take place in 2021.
