ISRO team suggests measures to restart oxygen production at Sterlite Copper

Chennai, May 15 : An expert team from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday visited Vedanta Ltd s copper smelter plant Sterlite Copper and suggested measures to set right the technical snag that halted oxygen production, the company said.
Oxygen production at Sterlite Copper located in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu was stopped on Friday due to a technical snag.
According to Vedanta, an expert team from ISRO came to the smelter plant to support the ongoing efforts and collaborate with the company s technical team.

The possibility of minor technical fluctuations was anticipated given that the plant has been unattended for three years, the company said in a statement.
According to Vedanta, a technical group has been stationed on site from day one to monitor the situation and provide real-time solutions for resuming production at the earliest.

After the Tamil Nadu government allowed Vedanta Ltd s shuttered copper smelter plant to produce oxygen for four months in Thoothukudi, the company has said the first batch of medical-grade oxygen has been dispatched. One of the plants of Vedanta s Sterlite Copper unit commenced production on May 12, following which the company has dispatched two oxygen tankers daily. The production is being scaled up gradually.

Oxygen production starts at the Sterlite Copper plant at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu with the first batch of medical-grade oxygen despatched from the port town. One of the oxygen plants commenced production from May 12. The first tanker carrying 4.8 tonnes of liquid oxygen is going to Tirunelveli / Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu.
This should be of help to the State, which is in need of higher quantities for oxygen due to the increase in the number of Coronavirus cases.
To begin with, Sterlite will despatch two oxygen tankers on a daily basis and gradually scale this as production is expanded, says a company press release.
