RAJESH The euphoria triggered by the generation of oxygen in Sterlite Copper’s oxygen plant for saving the COVID-19 patients was short-lived as an unexpected technical snag in the oxygen plant paralysed roduction late Thursday night. Consequently, the planned second load of oxygen from the plant on Thursday night could not be realised. The plant, after being idle for nearly three years, started generating oxygen since Wednesday evening and the first tanker with the 4.80 tonnes of oxygen produced in the plant took the life-saving gas to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital only on Thursday morning. It was expected that the plant, which would generate 5 to 6 tonnes a day for the first few days, would produce 35 tonnes of oxygen from Saturday / Sunday (May 15 / 16).

The vehicle carrying 4.82 KL of oxygen was flagged off by Tuticorin district collector, Dr K. Senthil Raj from the Sterlite premises. The district collector who is the monitoring committee chairman appointed by the state government on the directive of the Supreme court said that the quality check of the 4.82 KL of oxygen was done in the quality control laboratory within the Sterlite premises.

Senthil Raj, District Collector and chairperson of the State government-appointed monitoring committee for overseeing oxygen production from this plant.

Vishnu had a meeting with the top-brass of Indian Space Research Organisation’s Propulsion Research Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri on Wednesday to explore the possibilities of increasing the supply of the life-saving gas. As the IPRC has become a savior of the critically ill COVID-19 patients by supplying oxygen to the government medical college hospitals in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Aasaaripallam in Nagercoil, Mr. Vishnu met the officials of IPRC on Wednesday.
