Lincoln Courier The uncertain environment of the 2020 pandemic has made an impact on members of the Lincoln Rural Fire Department. Faced with daily challenges of helping those in need LRFD continues to keep Logan County safe Chris Buse, Chief of LRFD, said following the protocol of the Illinois Department of Public Health opened the eyes of many first responders. “There were more questions than answers when it first started,” said Buse. Trevor Matheny, Captain who also serves as the Fire/Arson Investigator and EMS Coordinator, said the concept of a pandemic was unthinkable. “In the beginning it was hard for all of us to understand what was happening around us. Guidelines would change quickly and the more time went on the public started to understand. Working in the COVID environment was high stress and it changed how we interacted with each other and the calls we went on,” said Matheny.

A grief-stricken Houston Fire Department fondly looked back at the life of Lemuel DJ Bruce, who had died while pursuing an arson suspect. Lemuel was scheduled to be off that night, but his wife said he was determined to solve the case he was leading. It was an investigation into a serial arsonist setting fires in the Heights area. Rachel said she and her husband went back and forth about whether or not he should go in to work. They finally decided it would be okay to work the shift, which was scheduled to start at 12 a.m. and end at 6 a.m.
