Experts: J&J pause shouldn t affect Nevada vaccination push

By SCOTT SONNER and KEN RITTERApril 14, 2021 GMT LAS VEGAS (AP) Nevada stopped using Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccines on Tuesday while federal authorities investigate reports of some people in other states experiencing serious reactions, including blood clots. However, state and local health officials said the “pause” should not affect ongoing vaccination efforts, because only about 4% of the nearly 1.55 million COVID-19 vaccinations administered in Nevada to date have been Johnson & Johnson. Most have been Moderna and Pfizer. “Our message today is that our campaign is based on multiple vaccines,” said Dr. Fermin Leguen, chief medical officer at the Las Vegas-based Southern Nevada Health District. “Pfizer and Moderna, those vaccines have proved to be effective and also to be safe.”

As a result, they recommend states pause the use of the Janssen vaccine out of an abundance of caution.

Based on the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services has announced the temporary suspension of the Janssen Johnson and Johnson (J%J) vaccine. Among more than 6.8 million doses administered nationwide, six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot have been reported, with symptoms occurring between 6 and 13 days after receiving the vaccine. Anyone who has received the J&J vaccine are encouraged to monitor their symptoms and be in contact with their doctor on their health status. According to the CDC & FDA, all six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48. The Washoe County Health District has administered about 2,878 doses of Janssen at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center and through its homebound program.
