A 32-year-old Terrebonne Parish man was convicted Thursday evening of multiple felony charges resulting from a 2019 police chase.
Jacob Fay Luke Sr., of Gray, was convicted of aggravated flight from an officer with human endangerment, resisting an officer by force or violence, attempted battery of a police officer and attempted possession of methamphetamine.
Luke’s conviction resulted from an incident that occurred during the early morning hours April 11, 2019, in the Mobile Estates area of Gray. A State Police trooper tried to initiate a traffic stop on a car Luke was driving, but the defendant refused to pull over, prosecutors said.
Residents filled Houma s Dumas Auditorium Thursday to hear the latest information about vaccines, crime, the justice system and other issues.
Hosted by Terrebonne Councilman Carl Harding, the informational meeting featured presentations from some of Terrebonne’s top officials including Parish President Gordy Dove, Emergency Preparedness Director Earl Eues, Sheriff Tim Soignet, Police Chief Dana Coleman, several judges, council members, business leaders, attorneys and other dignitaries.
In addition to hurricane preparation, Eues urged attendees to take the COVID-19 vaccination because local cases are on the rise.
“We’re starting to have a lot of cases of the coronavirus again,” Eues said. “The dominant strain is the delta strain which is very contagious. If you’ve not gotten the vaccine please get it. Almost 100% of those who are in the hospital right now have not been vaccinated. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, please wear masks, continue to social
A 54-year-old Houma man was ordered to serve 18 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to sexually abusing two young girls.
Chester Champagne Jr. pleaded guilty May 10 to two counts of molestation of a juvenile under 13 and one count of aggravated crime against nature, court records show.
After Champagne entered his pleas, District Judge Timothy Ellender Jr. of Houma sentenced him to 18 years in prison, 10 of which must be served without probation, parole or early release.
Champagne must also participate in a treatment program and register for life as a sex offender, Terrebonne Executive Assistant District Attorney Carlos Lazarus said. He must also have no contact with any of the victims during the duration of the sentence.
Suspect indicted on murder charge in Houma man s shooting death
A man accused of fatally shooting a Houma resident earlier this year has been indicted on a murder charge.
A Terrebonne Parish grand jury found enough evidence last week to charge 23-year-old Sherman Ruffin with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He is accused of killing Martin Jones, 26, during the early morning on Jan. 24 in Houma.
An indictment does not presume guilt or innocence but indicates the grand jury found prosecutors presented enough evidence to warrant a trial on the charges.
The shooting occurred 1:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Plant Road. Jones died at a local hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
