Stocks open higher on Wall Street, adding to record hig

NEW YORK (AP) Stocks are opening with modest gains on Wall Street, adding to the record highs they reached a day earlier and keeping the market on track to end its first week of the year broadly higher. The S&P 500 was up 0.4% in the early going Friday. The gains came even as the government reported the latest damage being done to the jobs market by the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. employers cut payrolls last month for the first time since April, leaving the economy with roughly 10 million fewer jobs since the pandemic set in nearly a year ago. Treasury yields continued to climb.

Biden confirmations, green stimulus to be early focuses of new Congress

But Democrats razor-thin majority in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives will require them to find common ground with the GOP, sources said. Georgia Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff defeated Republican incumbents Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in Jan. 5 runoff elections. As a result, the Senate will be divided 50/50 between the Republican and Democratic caucuses, with Democratic Vice President-elect Kamala Harris able to cast a tie-breaking vote once she and Biden are sworn in Jan. 20.

Perdue concedes to Ossoff in Georgia

In a statement, Perdue noted that while he finished ahead of Ossoff in the November general election, he had fallen short in the Jan. 5 runoff election, one of two in Georgia that helped hand Democrats control of the Senate. “Although we won the general election, we came up just short of Georgia’s 50% rule, and now I want to congratulate the Democratic Party and my opponent for this runoff win,” Perdue said. “Bonnie and I will continue to pray for our wonderful state and our great country. May God continue to bless Georgia and the United States of America.”  ADVERTISEMENT

Biden says he weighed tapping Sanders for Labor secretary

Biden made the remarks Friday afternoon as he introduced Boston Mayor Marty Walsh “I did give serious consideration to nominating my friend Bernie Sanders to this position. I’m confident he could have done a fantastic job,” Biden said. “I can think of no more passionate, devoted ally to working people in this country.” ADVERTISEMENT “But after Tuesday s results in Georgia, keeping Democratic control of the United States Senate in a tie vote, Bernie and I agreed … we can’t put the control of the Senate at risk on the outcome of a special election in Vermont,” Biden continued. The Hill has reached out to Sanders s office for comment.
