Gov Gavin Newsom nominates Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, to serve as next California secretary of state

Gov. Gavin Newsom today nominated Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, to serve as the next California secretary of state, a move that would make her the first Black woman to ever hold the position. Weber would replace Alex Padilla, who was appointed by Newsom earlier Tuesday to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Weber s nomination is subject to confirmation by the state Legislature. Dr. Weber is a tireless advocate and change agent with unimpeachable integrity, Newsom said. The daughter of sharecroppers from Arkansas, Dr. Weber s father didn t get to vote until his 30s and her grandfather never got to vote because he died before the Voting Rights Act passed in 1965. When her family moved to South Central Los Angeles, she saw as a child her parents rearrange furniture in their living room to serve as a local polling site for multiple elections.

California gets Latino US senator, some Black leaders angry

California gets Latino US senator, some Black leaders angry By MICHAEL R. BLOODDecember 23, 2020 GMT LOS ANGELES (AP) California is getting its first Latino U.S. senator. For Gov. Gavin Newsom, it’s a political gamble. The Democratic governor Tuesday named Secretary of State Alex Padilla, the son of Mexican immigrants, to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. When Padilla goes to Washington, the former state legislator will become California’s first Latino senator since the state’s founding 170 years ago. In picking a personal friend and fellow Democrat, Newsom had his eye on history and pragmatism he turned to someone he could trust with a year of uncertainty looming, including a possible recall election targeting the governor while the pandemic rages unabated.

California s New Senator, Elections Chief Share Their American Dreams

(California Assembly photo) California Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla, left, to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Assembly member Shirley Weber, right, will take Padilla’s spot as the Golden State’s elections chief. (CN) California’s new election chief Shirley Weber had a story to tell Wednesday as she was introduced to the state’s 40 million residents, save the San Diego County constituents she represents in the Assembly: Her grandfather never voted because he lived in Arkansas during Jim Crow, before the Voting Rights Act.  Her father fled Hope, Arkansas, because he was imminently in peril of being lynched. But once safely ensconced in California in the 1950s, Weber said one of the first things he did was vote because he finally had the opportunity to do so.

For CT s Cardona, Education Secretary post is key part of Joe Biden s agenda

By Jacqueline Rabe Thomas, CT Mirror President-elect Joe Biden Tuesday evening announced that Connecticut Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona is his pick to lead the U.S. Department of Education, an agency the president will rely on to get millions of students back into the schools closed by COVID-19 and to convince Congress to invest much more in education for a host of the president’s priorities. “In Miguel Cardona, America will have an experienced and dedicated public school teacher leading the way at the Department of Education ensuring that every student is equipped to thrive in the economy of the future, that every educator has the resources they need to do their jobs with dignity and success, and that every school is on track to reopen safely,” Biden said in a Tuesday evening press release.
