Washington [US], December 15 (ANI): Over a month after the US presidential elections, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday congratulated President-elect Joe Biden for the first time and publicly acknowledged him in the position, after the US Electoral College on Monday officially certified the former Vice-President s victory in the polls. Many of us hoped that the presidential election would yield a different result, but our system of government has processes to determine who will be sworn in on January 20. The Electoral College has spoken. Today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden, he said during a speech from the Senate floor, reported New York Times.

It is time to unite, heal and turn the page on the US election, President-elect Joe Biden told Americans, hours after the Electoral College affirmed his victory over Republican President Donald Trump, who has refused to concede his loss and filed a litany of legal challenges to overturn the poll results.

McConnell opened the Senate and also congratulated Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Harris is a senator from California. McConnell noted that the Electoral College has spoken and said Biden and Harris will be sworn-in on January 20th. The Electoral College certified Biden s win with 306 electoral votes this week. President Trump got 232. Biden also won the popular vote with more than 80-million tallies.
McConnell and other Senate Republican leaders had refused to acknowledge Biden s win for weeks after the presidential election. President Trump has vowed to continue fighting the election results. Lawyers for Trump and the Republican National Committee have lost dozens of legal challenges, including two at the U.S. Supreme Court.
