Kamala Harris made history in August 2020 as the first woman and first Black and South Asian woman to accept the vice-presidential nomination alongside former Vice President Joe Biden. Harris, a United States senator for California, also previously served as the attorney general of California.
After being confirmed as vice president-elect on November 7, Kamala Harris addressed the nation from Wilmington, Delaware, saying, While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.
Harris also spoke out against the pro-Trump riot at the Capitol in January 2021 and the police response, saying, We witnessed two systems of justice when we saw one that let extremists storm the United States Capitol, and another that released tear gas on peaceful protesters last summer .We know this is unacceptable. Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, wrote about the upcoming anniversary of
Roe v. Wade in his latest column, explaining that Catholics are obsessed with ending abortion and added that incoming President Joe Biden ran on a rabidly pro-abortion platform that supports this gruesome capital punishment for innocent pre-born babies.
Dolan says that a well-known political leader asked him why Catholics are so hung up about abortion?
Dolan replied, “Actually, we’re obsessed with the dignity of the human person and the sacredness of all human life! Yes, the innocent, helpless life of the baby in the womb, but also the life of the death row prisoner, the immigrant, the fragile elderly, the poor and the sick.”
Following narrow victories for Raphael G. Warnock and T. Jonathan âJonâ Ossoff in the runoff elections for Georgiaâs Senate seats, Harvard students met the news of a Democratic-controlled Senate with a mix of elation, regret, and tempered anticipation.
Ossoff defeated former Sen. David A. Perdue Jr. (R-Ga.) by 1.2 points, while Warnock defeated Sen. Kelly L. Loeffler (R-Ga.) by about two points. With these victories, Democrats will hold a narrow majority in the Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris as the tiebreaker in the 50-50 split.
Several Harvard students spent the day celebrating the Senate results, with many in states of disbelief. Anna L. Duffy â21, who worked as a Democratic field organizer in Georgia, said she spent the runoff day celebrating on a call with other campaigners for the Georgia Democrats.
