President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday evening formally nominated former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to be the next U.S. energy secretary and said he would appoint former EPA head Gina McCarthy as his national climate adviser. McCarthy s apparent appointment, meanwhile, had raised some concerns in Michigan because she ran the Environmental Protection Agency when it came under scrutiny for its handling of the Flint water crisis. Praise for Granholm began coming quickly as the official announcement was made. U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., who worked for her administration as lottery commissioner, called her a tireless advocate for Michigan workers and said her experience working with the auto industry will be important as the Biden administration looks to help automakers transition into making more electric vehicles.
