Mwaura to lose hefty perks after Senate ejection

Each MP earns a basic pay of Sh710,000 in addition to juicy sitting and travel perks, mileage allowance, Sh250,000 housing allowance, Sh5 million car grant, Sh7 million car loan and Sh20 million mortgage
Each legislator is paid Sh5,000 for six plenary sittings bringing the weekly take home to Sh60,000.
The amount has since last year been cut to below Sh45,000 weekly following reduction of sitting to five to stem the spread of Covid-19 after several MPs tested positive of the virus.
Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura will lose hefty perks in addition to repaying any outstanding mortgage and car loans after Senate Kenneth Lusaka issued a Gazette notice declaring his seat vacant.

Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has lost his Senatorial seat after Speaker Kenneth Lusaka gazetted his position.
In a gazette notice dated May, 10, 2021, Lusaka said the gazettement was in line with Article 98 (I) (d) of the constitution. It is notified for the information of the general public that pursuant to article 103(I) (e) (i) of the constitution section 37 of the Elections Act, the seat of Member of the Senate .. held by Hon. Isaac Mwaura Maigua became vacant with effect from May 7, 2021, read the notice.
Senator Mwaura last week suffered a blow when the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal upheld a decision of the ruling Jubilee Party to expel him on grounds of indiscipline.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party will appeal the ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) that dismissed its decision to expel six nominated senators allied to Deputy President William Ruto.
Party insiders said the leadership will move to the High Court to challenge the ruling that handed the embattled senators reprieve.
Jubilee Secretary-General (SG) Raphael Tuju said the party will convene its National Management Committee (NMC) meeting on Monday to deliberate on the next action.
Tuju spoke on Thursday after an event where he was awarded for championing women’s rights over the years. The event was organised by Echonet Africa and the Ministry of Public Affairs and Gender.

Opposition candidates claim there is a plot to rig the Bonchari by-election.
Led by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Kisii branch secretary Henry Moracha, the candidates and their supporters allege that voter intimidation is on the rise ahead of the by-election scheduled for May 18, 2021.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former Member of Parliament John Oroo. There has been harassment and intimidation. The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM supporters have been the targets. The by-election should not be used to cause division,” said Moracha.
