The Portland Police Bureau is reassigning officers to respond to the surge in gun violence that started last year.
Portland police are shifting officers to respond to a spike in gun violence as shootings continued through Thursday, Jan. 28.
Sgt. Kevin Allen told KOIN 6 News that officers dedicated to other focuses, such as organized crime and narcotics, are being diverted to patrols as part of the effort. Allen warned the reassignments will impact how the bureau is able to respond to other issues, however. The shootings that are happening right now are a huge priority for the city and a huge priority for us, but we also have a lot of other priorities, like traffic safety and community engagement. And a lot of other things that we want to do that we consider important as well, Allen said.

PORTLAND, Ore. A home near Southeast 84th and Clinton was riddled with bullets Thursday night. One of the bullets went through a 3-year-old girl s bedroom. She was not in there. The family was lucky, but that is not the case for everybody. It s the kind of pain you don t understand until you ve been through it, said Jennifer Adams. The crying is so deep inside.
Adams lost her brother-in-law, a father of three, to gun violence in mid-January. His brother-in-law was also shot and killed in the same Southeast Portland shooting.

Hunzeker pointed to a case last week where a suspected DUII driver caused two crashes in three days in Portland.
