Ohio governor disappointed by 1st year pardon plan results

Ohio governor disappointed by 1st year pardon plan results January 22, 2021 GMT COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Results from a program to make applying for pardons simpler and faster have been a disappointment, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Friday as he made a push to promote the program he launched a year ago. The Republican governor launched the Expedited Pardon Project in December 2019 to speed up the clemency process for residents who have a felony conviction but have become contributing members of society. ADVERTISEMENT Nine people received a pardon in the project’s first year, but the state estimates thousands of others qualify. DeWine held an online event to spread the word and encourage more people to apply.

Mike DeWine has granted nine pardons a year after his administration created a faster path to a gubernatorial pardon far short of the big numbers the governor had hoped to see. “I’m disappointed. I think it’s been one of the many casualties of COVID,” said DeWine, who announced the expedited pardon project at Ohio State University law school in December 2019. The pandemic limited access to courts, where applicants must obtain records, and efforts to promote the program were put on hold, he said.
