A renegade mouse cursor signaled the danger at the water treatment plant in Oldsmar, Florida.
On Feb. 5, a plant operator for the city of about 15,000 on Florida’s west coast saw his cursor being moved around on his computer screen, opening various software functions that control the water being treated. The intruder boosted the level of sodium hydroxide or lye in the water supply to 100 times higher than normal.
Bocilla Island Seaport project forges ahead
By PAULETTE LeBLANC - | Mar 10, 2021
Hans Wilson and Associates is in the process of designing and permitting the much talked about Bocilla Island Seaport project in Bokeelia. The marina renovation has been a topic for many islanders concerned with increased traffic, both on the water and on land, but Wilson says the boat slips reflect current industry standards for anticipated vessels and controlling depth to the site.
“We are in the process of doing the design and permitting in accordance with all the local, state and federal regulations,” said Wilson. “The docks that are there are very old and do not reflect current design standards for today’s vessels. Keeping the number of boat slips that are allowed with the property, per the county’s manatee protection plan, we’ve redesigned to reflect what the slip sizes are that we anticipate for this community given the controlling water depths at Jug Creek.”

OCALA, Fla., March 10, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The Rodman Dam on the Ocklawaha River should be reclassified as a high hazard structure based on a new independent civil engineering analysis of previously undisclosed government inspection reports.
The report released by the Florida Defenders of the Environment shows that the state Department of Environmental Protection has ignored a long list of structural weaknesses documented at the dam for more than five years, raising the risk of a dam breach that would threaten downstream communities, including hundreds of homes and other buildings valued at nearly $60 million.

DeSantis tries again to strip the Florida Cabinet of its powers
Orlando Sentinel 3/10/2021 Gray Rohrer, Orlando Sentinel
TALLAHASSEE Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet met Tuesday, wrapping up a year of infrequent gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If DeSantis gets his way, it would have even less to do.
For the second year in a row, DeSantis is pushing for a bill to eliminate Cabinet oversight over a slew of agency and state personnel rules and transfer many of those powers to himself or agencies he controls, arguing that America’s Founding Fathers envisioned a “unitary executive.”
“The founders very consciously declined to sap the executive’s strength by dividing the executive power and instead vested the executive power in one elected individual, believing that an energetic executive is the leading character in the definition of good government,” the bill, HB 1537, reads in its opening section.
