We love our majestic mountains and beautiful valleys but our natural resources demand strong stewardship to preserve for future generations.
In the 2021 legislative session, water quality will again come before our state representatives. Our state Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) is required to submit recommendations to our legislature periodically under the federal Clean Waters Act. You might remember that in 2019, our WV legislature voted on updating the acceptable limits of 60 water contaminants, as recommended by the WVDEP. In six months, the vacant, sprawling Strathmore Paper Mill has been engulfed in flames four times - the most recent being Dec. 10.
Fires were set in two of the old mill buildings in June, July, November, and December. The destruction released asbestos that the Department of Environmental Protection cleaned and is holding the property owner liable for costs.
Owner Jacob Trudeau purchased the mill in 2019 for $15,000 and hoped to put a marijuana cultivation business there, according to the Berkshire Eagle. The building was not insured, the paper reported. At the time Trudeau said he had much of the building cleaned out and was having difficulty securing the massive structure from trespassers.

The state Department of Environmental Protection yesterday announced more than $34 million in funding for cleaning up stream waters across the commonwealth. $2.7 million of that is earmarked for the southwest portion of the state, and some of it will be put to use in Indiana County. Other funding in neighboring counties could impact streams that flow through Indiana County, and vice versa.
Funds specifically marked for Indiana County include $121,061 for the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy, Kiski-Conemaugh Stream Team Water and Assistance Program. That portion of the funding will also be used in Cambria, Armstrong, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties.
