Taiwan takes five medals at Edison Awards

A Taiwanese artificial intelligence (AI)-based warehousing solution took home a gold medal at the Edison Awards, where the nation also collected a silver and three bronze medals, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.
The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI, 工研院) won gold in the AI applications category of the Edison Awards on Friday last week with an AI-based high-density shuttle rack service system, the ministry said.
The Edison Awards Web site says that the system is a “smart urban logistic solution” that features a “human-robot hybrid technology,” enables faster performance and saves on labor, as well as space with “automated vertical warehousing.”

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) Taiwan has won five medals one gold, one silver and three bronze at the 2021 Edison Awards, which honor the world s most innovative new products, services and business leaders.
The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), partnered with Yahoo Taiwan, HCT Logistics Co. and iAmech Technology Inc. for its AI-based high-density shuttle rack service system, was awarded the gold medal in the category of AI application.
According to the ITRI, the system, which targets traditional logistics operators, can provide smart automated vertical warehousing, as well as improved inventory management efficiency and reduced overhead costs.

A new study by Tel Aviv University found that the British variant (B 1.1.7) of Covid-19 is 45 percent more contagious than the original virus. The researchers relied on data from around 500,000 PCR tests for Covid-19, which had been obtained from the Covid-19 test laboratory, which was set up in collaboration with the Electra Group. The new study was carried out by Ariel Munitz and Moti Geritz from the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine. This was done in collaboration with Dan Yamin and PhD student Matan Yechezkel from the LEMA laboratory at the Department of Industrial Technology, all at Tel Aviv University. The results of the study were published in the prominent scientific journal “Cell Reports Medicine”.
