Spangdahlem reverses course on classroom return; all US base schools in Germany to continue online

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Students at Spangdahlem Air Base won’t be returning to in-person classes after all on Monday. School and base officials said Friday night that Department of Defense Education Activity schools at Spangdahlem will continue remote instruction through at least Feb. 12, as will all other DODEA schools in Germany. There will be no instruction Monday or Tuesday and Spangdahlem principals will provide information on preparations to continue remote learning, Kent Worford, DODEA Europe West superintendent, said in a letter Friday night to staff members and families.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Schools at all but one U.S. military base in Germany will continue remote instruction through at least Feb. 12, officials announced Thursday. Schools at Spangdahlem Air Base are the sole exception, the Department of Defense Education Activity-Europe said. “We will continue to work with military and public health officials to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary,” DODEA-Europe said in a statement. “The health and safety of our students, staff and community is our top priority.”

The Council of Chief State Schools Officers announced on Wednesday the finalists for the national award, which recognizes teachers for their work inside and outside the classroom. The teacher who receives the national honor will be granted a yearlong sabbatical to represent the profession and advocate for an issue of choice.

With COVID-19 cases on the rise across Germany, both host nation and Department of Defense Education Activity schools transitioned back to remote learning after a brief period of in-person instruction in fall 2020. Remote learning is projected to last through this month, pending any updates from German officials. With the first few weeks of remote learning underway, Steven Sanchez, DODEA East District superintendent, and Col. Robert Thompson, 86th Airlift Wing Mission Support Group commander, discussed base schools and child care during a Virtual Town Hall Jan. 14.
