Defense Department students in Bahrain will begin remote learning starting Monday amid a sharp rise in new coronavirus cases in the small island kingdom, school officials said.
The decision to close the classrooms came after the Navy base in Bahrain announced it would shift to the second-highest health protection condition risk level, school officials said in a letter to parents and staff members Thursday.

The four students, who scrawled swastikas, offensive messages and images of genitalia on the walls of the elementary and the middle/high schools, were suspended after the incident in late February, said Department of Defense Education Activity Europe spokesman Stephen Smith. They also faced other disciplinary actions, he said. One student has since moved and the others are back in school, he said.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Schools at all but one U.S. military base in Germany will continue remote instruction through at least Feb. 12, officials announced Thursday. Schools at Spangdahlem Air Base are the sole exception, the Department of Defense Education Activity-Europe said. “We will continue to work with military and public health officials to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary,” DODEA-Europe said in a statement. “The health and safety of our students, staff and community is our top priority.”
