Tulsa Race Massacre Prayer Room Offers Healing for Tragedy’s Centennial TULSA, Okla. (BP) – A hundred years after a horrific massacre, Deron Spoo hopes to set the foundation for a new narrative. The senior pastor of Tulsa’s First Baptist has studied the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, in which as many as 300 Blacks were killed and 35 blocks of Black-owned homes and businesses were reduced to ashes over a two-day period. First Baptist was among White congregations that helped house more than 10,000 displaced Black residents. But in the Sundays following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, comments from pastors of those same churches were not indicative of the aid extended.

Circle Cinema was one of 25 satellite locations to host the festival nationwide. It also screened the movies at Admiral Twin drive-in. The theater said it’s donating $16,400, which is 100 percent of general admission ticket sales.

Maxine Horner, one of first Black women in Oklahoma s Senate, dies at 88

TULSA Maxine Horner, a longtime state lawmaker from Tulsa who broke barriers in the 1980s as one of the first Black women elected to the Oklahoma Senate before later going on to champion the cause of Tulsa Race Massacre survivors, died Sunday. She was 88. Services are pending. She was “truly our hero. She is without a doubt the epitome of extraordinary," said Horner’s daughter Shari Tisdale, announcing her death Monday on Facebook. "Please respect this time as we go through the next steps. We appreciate your love and words of encouragement.” Horner served 18 years as a state senator for the 11th District, beginning in 1987.
