DULUTH, Minn.- At their second to last meeting of the year Duluth City Council voted on, among other things, next year’s distribution of a smaller pot of Tourism Tax Revenue due to the effects of the pandemic.
Last year, about $12 million in Tourism Tax or Hotel, Motel, Food and Beverage Tax Revenue was collected for Duluth tourism-related investments and to help pay for some of the city’s debt obligations.
The additional funding will come at the expense of Spirit Mountain. The Duluth City Council chose to deviate Monday from Mayor Emily Larson s proposed plan for how the city should divvy up tourism tax proceeds next year.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Duluth s collections of tourism taxes are running about 30% below expectations this year, and Larson forecasts 2021 revenues will remain 25% below those of 2019, bringing in about $9 million versus $12 million last year.

Duluth councilors discussed a wide range of topics on Monday night. Among them was whether to establish a commission to meet the needs of the LGBT community.
Community members who spoke out at Monday night s council meeting expressed their support for the LGBTQ+ commission, and for councilors putting forward the initiative. This commission is an essential resource not only to city staff, but also to our community in forming a better, brighter future for queer, trans and two spirit youth locally, said Courtney Cochran of Duluth.

The goal of the commission is to advise the mayor, city council, city departments, and community at large about issues of concern affecting non-binary and binary queer, trans, two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex, and asexual communities.
