Photos: Local residents pay tribute to those who served their country

Banners will honour Estevan s military history

Bird would like to see banners hang from light standards on arterial roads in the city. The banners will have images of Canadian Forces members from the Estevan area who perished during service to Canada, and also photos of those who served, survived and came back to the Estevan area. “There’s a lot of them in which people who walked down the street wouldn’t know who they were, or even that they served,” said Bird. “Part of the foundation of our museum is to remember all those, not only the ones that we lost, but also the ones that had served, contributed to this city and this great community and became founding citizens of this community.”

Young people enjoyed Easter egg hunt

More than 75 egg hunters turned out over the six days. “They came out and they did an Easter egg hunt. And then once they were finished, we had an Easter scavenger hunt they could do in another part of the yard,” she said. The scavenger hunt saw participants given a list of 12 items they had to find that were hidden throughout the yard. At each item, there was a letter which, when brought together, spelled out a message of “Happy Easter.” About 90 per cent of those who came out for the hunts toured the museum once they were finished. “They were all excited. Some of them are planning to come back and bringing grandma and grandpa, mom and dad, brothers and sisters, at a different time when they want to come,” said Tina Bird.

Estevan legion has proven its financial stability

We had some financial difficulties a few years ago, and Saskatchewan command installed an advisory committee to watch over us. We ve been under the advisory committee for four years. And as of (Dec. 15) we ve been released from the advisory committee, said Royal Canadian Legion Estevan branch president Jim (Frosty) Forrest. It s good work that the branch has done and the support of the community as well. The legion also held the election of officers the same night. Forrest was re-elected as the branch president for the next two years. Tyson Wilhelm was elected the first vice-president. Willie Forrest is now the second vice-president. Leonard Grube was elected the legion’s treasurer, and Willie Forrest is also sergeant at arms. Other executive officers were also elected.

Festival of Lights will break its records

Maureen Daoust, who is the business manager at the Woodlawn Regional Park, said that so far everything is falling into place for another great season for the holiday attraction, and they are very excited about the number of participants they have this year. We are very pleased with the new groups that are coming, and obviously we applaud those that are returning, she said. This year the park opened the Festival of Lights to families, charitable organizations and service clubs, and that attracted quite a few new groups. There was a couple of families (that joined). There was a group of seasonal campers that decided to do (a display). There is another site that is a local person. And we also had a couple of services come. The Kinettes have joined, the group with the Faith Lutheran Church, they also registered and are decorating their space down here. EMS are joining, Southeast Military Museum and other retail (stores) or businesses, said Daoust.
