Seeing Both Sides
During Ciarra McClinton’s senior year at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, Baylor University recruited the accomplished young debater and offered her a scholarship to come to Waco. And while her freshman year as a Baylor debater was different than what she imagined (with the COVID-19 pandemic), she still managed to win her first college competition. McClinton’s win was another in a long line of victories that have maintained Baylor’s excellence in debate for more than a century.
Baylor’s first intercollegiate debate took place in 1893 against the University of Texas, which means that Baylor has been facing other universities in debate for longer than it has in football or any other sport. Since that first contest, Baylor has won the National Debate Tournament three times and has placed teams in the Final Four of the national tournament nine times.

Retiring Educators: Tecumseh teacher to retire after 43 years
After 43 years in education Tecumseh Language Arts teacher Sharon Barnett is retiring.
According to Barnett, she felt this year was the best time to retire and be with her family. (I m retiring) mostly for family and wanting to spend more time with my grandchildren, Barnett said. I m going to help them. I m going to be their teacher.
Barnett grew up in Tecumseh and attended Tecumseh Public Schools. I went from first grade through until I graduated in 1974, Barnett said.
The educator attended Seminole State College, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma, where she received her degree in education.
Writers, biographers protest W.W. Norton’s decision to “permanently” remove Blake Bailey’s biography of Philip Roth from print
On April 27, publisher W.W. Norton announced it was “permanently” removing Blake Bailey’s biography of American novelist Philip Roth (1933–2018) from print. Several individuals have accused Bailey of sexual wrongdoing, including rape. None of them have come forward with any evidence to back up the claims.

We argued on the WSWS that this was “a major act of censorship, with chilling implications for democratic rights. … The purging of Bailey’s book sets a sinister example, intended to intimidate artists, biographers and scholars alike. The message being sent is clear: any influential figure who rubs establishment public opinion the wrong way can be denounced and dispatched in like manner.”
