East Lyme The Board of Finance after lengthy deliberations approved a proposed $77.99 million budget that officials hope will put the town in a good position as it slowly emerges from the coronavirus pandemic.
If the spending plan makes it intact through a public hearing on Monday and a budget referendum in May, there will be one new police officer and numerous new teachers to help the town face the realities of the 2021-22 fiscal year.
The proposal designates $52.21 million for education, $19.38 million for general government, $5.72 million for debt service and $683,113 for capital. It represents a total increase of 2.37% over the current budget.
NORWICH Norwich City Planner Deanna Rhodes said during a weekly Friday meeting that the city needs to hire another building official to take over for one that is retiring.
Norwich Building Official Dan Coley said the city recently hired a temporary building official full time, but after a 6-month probationary period, the new building official notified the city that he was retiring and moving to Florida.
Rhodes said the Building Department is still looking for one or two people on a part-time and seasonal basis to keep up with demand.
“Our spring and summer season picks up, and we have pretty big projects on the horizon,” Rhodes said.

New London A $1 million road safety improvement project has begun at Tilley, Bank and Sparyard Streets.
Funded through the Local Road Accident Reduction grant program, the modernization project will involve three intersections with signal and pedestrian accessibility upgrades.
Mayor Michael Passero said not only are current signals outdated but the area has a higher rate of accident exposure due to high traffic volume and its proximity to fire headquarters, resulting in heavy use by emergency vehicles.
The project includes the placement of innovative technology down to Howard Street to manage and control traffic signal priority for emergency responders. The upgrades will allow for preemption of the signals by fire personnel on route to emergency calls.
