SPS ROSE banquet: Hillcrest High School s Top 10 in Class of 2021 Ten Hillcrest High School seniors will be honored April 15 during the Springfield district s Recognition of Scholastic Excellence, or ROSE, banquet. Each year, the 10 graduating students with the highest GPA from each high school are honored. This year, due to ties in GPA, Kickapoo and Parkview high schools each have 11 honorees. The News-Leader will showcase students from each high school this week. The ROSE banquet will be hosted by Missouri State University this year Landon Ryan Clark The child of Ryan Clark and Kristi Clark, Landon plans to seek a degree in business management from Evangel University and pursue a career as an entrepreneur possibly in the technology field.  

Springfield Public Schools name two new leaders, one principal change

The three individuals will start their new roles July 1. Merica Clinkenbeard, the current instructional specialist for migrant and English learners with the Agency for Teaching, Leading and Learning at Missouri State University, will be the district s next director of English language learning. She has 18 years of experience as a language proponent and student advocate. She is a certified K-12 Spanish and ESL teacher with a research focus on professional learning to promote language proficiency. Clinkenbeard previously served as English learner coordinator for the Hollister district for three years. She holds a doctorate in instructional leadership at Lindenwood University. “I am excited by this opportunity to help teachers of English learners become leaders in our profession,” said Clinkenbeard, in a release. “My emphasis on relationship building and community partnerships, along with my professional background in compliance, instructional strategies and professional le

Court Rules Social Work Professor Not a Minister, Can Sue Christian College for Discrimination In a significant church-state case that could bring implications for Christian higher education, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled March 5 that not all professors at Christian colleges could be considered ministers and therefore such schools are not immune from discrimination lawsuits. Gordon College, a nondenominational school founded in a Baptist Church in 1889, unsuccessfully argued a social work professor denied promotion could not sue the school Wenham, Massachusetts, for discrimination because the school deemed all professors as ministers. The U.S. Supreme previously backed a “ministerial exception” to exempt religious groups from anti-discrimination laws with regard to employment of its “ministers.” The justices have applied this principle to teachers at Lutheran and Catholic elementary schools where the teachers lacked official ministerial titles but taught religion an
