MARSHALL, Minn. (KEYC) Southwest Minnesota State University announced Tuesday it has received a commitment of nearly $2 million from a former student.
The $1.8 million donation for the Student Success and Advising Center and scholarships was made by Deeann J. Griebel, who earned an accounting degree from SMSU in 1980.
The investment from the Pipestone, Minn., native will allow for the creation of new tutoring and mentoring programs that will aim to ensure that all students have the resources and support they need to be successful.

No matter what types of careers a student is considering, it’s important to get some exposure to those careers while in high school (or before!). If a career isn’t what a student was expecting it to be, the sooner they find this out, the better. Conversely, if a student finds their chosen path is a good fit, engaging in meaningful experiences can help grow their knowledge and better prepare them for entering that field.

Larvita McFarquhar, owner of Havenâs Garden in Lynd, was called onstage with guest speaker Richard Mack at an event Jan. 29. While McFarquhar is still being fined for not complying with COVID-19 restrictions at her business, the restaurant has hosted some Friday night events like Mackâs talk and a Valentineâs Day dinner.
LYND Haven’s Garden was quiet the morning of Feb. 9, although a flier at the door advertised a Valentine’s Day dinner party later that week.
The lights were off in the Lynd restaurant’s bar area and part of the seating area, and there weren’t any customers eating or stopping in to place orders.
