SVMC s $26 million Emergency Department renovation gets regulatory approval

Vermont Business Magazine The Green Mountain Care Board, Vermont’s regulatory healthcare board, granted Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC), a Certificate of Need (CON) for a $26 million project to modernize and expand its Emergency Department and renovate its main entrance and public areas on the ground floor. Traffic and parking improvements are also included. The regulatory approval was necessary to proceed with the project. “Our current emergency department was designed to serve 12,000 – 13,000 patients per year, but it currently accommodates about twice that number,” said Thomas A. Dee, FACHE, SVHC’s president and CEO. “Modernizing the Emergency Department will create a space equal to the highly skilled and compassionate care provided by our board-certified emergency physicians, Magnet® nurses, and members of our support team.”

BENNINGTON â More than 100 residents and healthcare workers at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine earlier this week, in the first of three clinics to ensure that the entire staff and resident population receives the necessary two shots. The vaccines were administered by Walgreens Pharmacy. The first vaccines were given to CLR resident Thomas McAndrews and licensed nursing assistant Jennifer George. Both volunteered to be the first to receive the vaccine. An additional 130 healthcare workers and residents received the vaccine throughout the day. âThe pandemic has been a very long, lonely time for many of our residents,â Suzanne Anair, CLRâs administrator, said in a statement. âWe are overjoyed to receive the vaccine and to begin putting an end to the fear and isolation that the pandemic has caused.â

BENNINGTON â As hoped, Southwestern Vermont Health Careâs planned $26 million Emergency Department modernization project has won certificate of need approval from the Green Mountain Care Board prior to the end of 2020. The project will expand the currently undersized department, reconfigure the main entrance to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and nearby hospital department and include parking and access road improvements. A spring 2021 groundbreaking is planned, with construction expected to be completed in 2023. SVHC President and CEO Thomas Dee noted that the current Emergency Department was designed in the mid-1990s to accommodate 12,000 to 13,000 patients per year, but that figure recently has averaged about 23,700.
