Whiston Hospital staff praised for going above and beyond A ST HELENS woman has thanked NHS staff for going “above and beyond the call of duty” following a recent stint at Whiston Hospital. Kimberley Roby, 34, from Thatto Heath, spent four days at the hospital last week after being admitted for a non-Covid related issue. Despite being under such immense pressure, Kimberley said all of the hospital’s staff, including the cleaners and lunch ladies “kept her going”.

Whiston Hospital (picture: Steve Samosa) EARLY signs suggest admissions at Whiston Hospital are starting to slow, as the NHS trust passes the grim milestone of 500 Covid-related deaths. Staff have been dealing with a relentless flow of Covid patients in recent weeks, after infection rates rocketed over the Christmas period. St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has had to double its intensive care capacity, and the number of deaths has continued to rise. This week has proved particularly distressing, with 61 deaths recorded in the seven days up to Friday. On Wednesday, the deaths of 23 people who tested positive for Covid-19 were included in the daily figures from NHS England, the highest total recorded in a single day on record.
